Alexandra (Lexi) is a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in applied mathematics and quantitative biology with a minor in music. Her current research is in creating a mathematical model of intrinsic pathway-initiated blood coagulation with the Leiderman Research Group at UNC. In the future, she aims to achieve a Ph.D. and pursue a research career in mathematical biology. This summer, Lexi is looking forward to working with the Mitchison Lab in modeling the dynamics of microtubules. In her free time, she enjoys teaching piano lessons, trying new coffee shops, fishing, and competitive powerlifting.

  • Caspar Carson

Caspar is a Junior at SUNY Binghamton majoring in Biological sciences, with a focus on infectious disease. I currently research microbiome-facilitated colonization resistance to Clostridium difficile and its mechanisms of sporulation with the McKenney lab. Caspar is also an amateur photographer, and run the photography section for my university's campus newspaper.

  • Daniel Alfonso-Travieso

I am currently a junior at the University of Central Florida. I am majoring in mathematics with a concentration in biology and minoring in bioinformatics and genomics. In my past research experience, I observed different routes of exposure to a toxicant using physiologically based pharmacokinetic models. I hope to pursue an MD/PhD, where I can apply my understanding of mathematical and statistical modeling to ongoing questions in computational and systems biology. I am looking forward to conducting research under the guidance of Dr. Marie-Abele Bind this summer! Aside from mathematics, I enjoy spending my time watching soccer and playing games with my friends!

  • Joanne Sarsam

Joanne is a rising senior at UCLA studying Computational and Systems Biology. Her current research is in applying computational fluid dynamics to non-invasively predict fetal aortic hemodynamics with the Afshar Lab at UCLA. She is very excited to join the Higgins Lab this summer, where she will be studying dynamical models of human pathophysiology. In the future, Joanne aims to become a physician-scientist, taking a computational approach to reproductive biology research. In her free time, Joanne enjoys exploring the outdoors, crocheting new designs, and playing music.

  • Jonah Pacis

Jonah is a rising senior at Swarthmore College studying Computational Biology with minors in Statistics and Japanese. In the Collins Lab at Swarthmore, he is currently building a high-throughput system to quantify sleep in multiple planaria species. He also previously worked in the Devenport Lab at Princeton University where he investigated the intracellular trafficking dynamics in the mammalian cell. His interests lie in genomics, regenerative medicine, and developmental biology and he ultimately plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Computational Biology. Outside of the lab, Jonah enjoys trying out new restaurants, drinking tea, and training guide dog puppies.

  • Kyle Mundy

Kyle is a rising senior at Purdue University studying Biomedical Engineering. His current research at Purdue focuses on creating largescale transcriptomic datasets to predict relevant clinical outcomes in the Kazemian Lab and quantifying proteomic profiles for improved drug delivery in the Solorio Lab. He is looking forward to joining the Klein Lab this summer. He plans to pursue a PhD in Bioengineering and ultimately wants to improve drug efficacy by combining computational models and biological tests. Outside of academics, Kyle spends his time playing basketball and soccer, listening to music, and exploring new foods.

  • Malachy Guzman

Malachy is a rising senior at Carleton College studying mathematics. His current research interests broadly include physical and mathematical approaches to understanding complex biological processes, such as in neural networks, development, and molecular dynamics. He’s very excited to be joining the Gunawardena Lab this summer, where he will study mathematical models of information processing in gene regulatory networks. After undergrad, he aims to pursue a PhD and research career at the intersection of quantitative and systems biology. Outside of the lab, Malachy enjoys cooking, DJing on his college’s radio station, and learning Brazilian jiu jitsu.

  • Miriya Mayenkar

Miriya Mayenkar is a student at UC Berkeley studying Bioengineering and Business Administration through the M.E.T. Program. Previously, she conducted research at Stanford University in the Skylar-Scott Lab and Halpern-Felsher REACH Lab. At Harvard, she will be working in the Prigozhin Lab studying cathodoluminescence. Post-graduation, Miriya hopes to positively impact the healthcare industry as a physician-scientist and explore the intersection of healthcare and business. Outside of school, she loves listening to music, traveling, learning new languages, and doing graphic design.

  • Posey Whidden

Posey is a rising senior double majoring in Biochemistry and French and francophone studies at Vassar College. She has previously worked in the Pokrywka lab at Vassar, investigating the role of microtubules in the development of Drosophila melanogaster ovaries. Her main research interests lie in the signaling, reception and transfer of information within a cell. Posey plans to continue biochemical research and pursue a PhD in molecular genetics. Outside of scientific research, she is on the varsity rowing team, works at the Brew (a student run coffee bar on campus), researches for the French department, and edits for Vassar’s chapter of the Grey Matters neuroscience journal. For fun, Posey enjoys live music, spending time by the water, puzzles with friends, and taking care of her gecko jaun.

  • Sarah Nakamura

Sarah is a student at the University of Nebraska Omaha majoring in Bioinformatics with a minor in Computer Science. She is currently a member of the Cooper lab focusing on reproducible application of computational analysis on biomedical data. In her most recent project, she performed bulk RNA sequence analysis comparing cell lines in the study of prostate cancer. She is also working on building a pipeline for computational analysis for 16S rRNA sequencing in a collaboration between the Cooper lab and Clayton lab at UNO. In the future, Sarah hopes to pursue a PhD and contribute to the development of precision medicine. Outside of school, she enjoys traveling, exploring new coffee shops, and running.
